ROCHE-LE-PEYROUX

Surface: 1770 acres
Population: 84 inhabitants
Etymology: from Peyrou, important ownership of the Ventadour family
Waterway: Dordogne,Diège
Distance from Neuvic: 9 miles
Characteristics: village situated at the confluence of the rivers Diège and Dordogne

The church
It is small and, as in Sainte Marie Lapanouze, its simplicity shows that the inhabitants were living modestly. To activate the bells, the parish priest had to clmb a long and narrow ladder. The inscription« SIGIG » on the wall has never been elucidated.

The dam of the Chaumettes
Ii is on the river Diège, which has very hilly and wild gorges. A tunnel of 1,5 miles is going to the factory of Valbeynete. The dam was put into operation in 1927. With its modest size (33 meters high, for a reservoir of 7 millions m3), its average productivity is about 79 millions of kWh.

Val Beneyte
This name meaning "consecrated valley" comes from the small village situated on the banks of the river Dordogne. Saint Léobon, a holy person, might have lived and died in this village. A chapel was standing there but it was drowned, with all the houses, when the dam of Marèges started to work.
