History of Neuvic

Neuvic, from the latin words "Novus vicus" ("new city")

Middle Ages : knighthood and troubadours

During the 13th century, the Ventadour's castle was built and Neuvic was fortified. Then a cultural development began with the construction of the churches and the troubadours. Bernart de Ventadour, very famous poet was singing « l’amour courtois » ("courteous love").

The Dordogne and the "gabares"

During the 18th and the 19th centuries, the trade was thriving thanks to the river Dordogne. The navigators were using big rowing boats in wood called "gabares" to carry raw materials, especially wood, to Bordeaux.
